Guided Tour Landscape Design #Three

Guided Tour Landscape Design #Three takes us to a Modern Hillside Haven in West Linn, Oregon.

robin'snestWest Linn, high on a slope overlooking the Willamette Falls, way back when, circa 1840’s, was originally called, “Robin’s Nest.”  In 1913,  five dollars was offered for the best name for the expanding new town. Apparently no one was pleased with the judges selected name Millsburg and adopted West Linn, in memory of the old pioneer town of Linn City (Robin’s Nest).

Quite an interesting past, this Oregon trail – pioneer city, however, the hillside slopes are what we are focused on in this blog. And by the looks of the hillside in this historical photo, we can see what the city was dealing with.

A DESIGN PLAN TAKES SHAPE

In the Schmidt’s property, the challenge was a split level backyard going nowhere. It was basically out the back door and up the steps, without a destination. When Micah Dennis consulted with the homeowners to assess the landscape, the unattractive concrete wall needed re-thinking, the property needed elements and usable go-to spaces. The couple wanted clean lines and a modern style. Our amazing designer for this property was spot on, don’t you think?

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

But first things first, eh?  Hardscaping. An upper patio hardscape was needed as well as a face-lift to the existing concrete patio at the homes level. To our surprise, mountains of rock was just below the surface as we dug in. Our crews are some of the best in Portland landscaping and  with plenty of elbow grease, the hardscaping patios began taking shape. Thanks again Team Paradise for a job well done!

ADDING FIRE & WATER ELEMENTS – MORE CONSTRUCTION

Fire features work in landscapes. Having two is even better

As there was a border-like concrete wall outside the back door, THE DESIGN PLAN incorporates a fireplace wall to minimize this unappealing look. Also, the concrete retaining wall needed an eye-sore remedy. Enter a unique water feature that pours out from the wall and into a metal basin. Border planters accent the water feature as well as add cohesion to the fire features.

On the upper patio, a metal matching corten firepit became a focal point – with its accompanying custom seat-bench.

A major design feature then comes into play with the addition of custom wood to finish the modern-looking pieces – perfect!

The side yard from the gate shows custom wood to cover the air conditioner – a detail giving  the landscape even  more unity.

LOW LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE DUE TO ELEVATION MAKES PERFECT SENSE

Adding synthetic grass was one specific the homeowners asked for in this landscape design. And we agree! Hauling a mower to the second level is now unnecessary! The view also shows a lounge area with staggered concrete. Visually it enhances the minimalist concept and is a great spot for loungers or private relaxation during the heat of summer.

NOW THAT YOU’VE SEEN A BIT OF THE PROCESS. . .

One step into this contemporary backyard haven and you experience an immediate feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. Carved into the hillside, three copper spouts spill into a modern water basin . . .  with bookend planters creating a perfect balance. Water lovers grab a chair at the bistro table, enjoy a beverage and unwind to the sounds of peaceful water play.

For those who love the dance of flames, you won’t be disappointed. Outdoor living is made even sweeter with a modernistic fireplace wall set within a hillside border. The stylish landscape design captivates with a second fire feature, a wood-burning metal firepit featured on the upper-level patio. A built-in seat wall offers plenty of space to star gaze while enjoying the flicker of firelight. Best part – an ultimate view from the top!

AN OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM HAS EASY ACCESS TO INDOOR NECESSITIES!

Think you have the gist of it. Nice property tour, eh? Small, modern landscape in the West Linn Hills – quite extraordinary, really. We also thank our homeowners, the Schmidts!
